There’s something so warm and uplifting about a backyard gathering, isn’t there? A long summer day full of laughter, great tunes, and pie (okay, perhaps that’s my version). These East Coast transplants managed to have their lush Pacific Northwest venue offer all the cozy and charming vibes of a summer picnic and all the modern elements of a properly planned wedding celebration.
With a vibrant array of blooms and wildflowers as well as a variety of dusty blue dresses for bridesmaids, this wedding scene had all the natural notion that comes with the Mt. rainier meadow (sorry, I’m lost in a local reverie currently). Our bride was looking for a fun dress to match her outfit and discovered her prize at a Sarah Seven trunk show in Seattle (yeah, it’s a girl!)
The desserts, oh, how often do I get lost in the sweets! The table for desserts was packed with deliciously rustic sweets with nothing more appealing than hand-made pies personalized by the host, which are a must for the backyard summer celebration If you would like to know.
Our Love Story
Travis and I attended Medical school with me in Philadelphia. We first became friends on the intramural football team of the medical school. Travis was the funky guy on the team. He had a huge personality. Everyone loved him. We remained friends for two years before the decision was made to enter into an intimate relationship. Six months later, there was no doubt that something was going on between us. He refers to it as the “ultimate long play …”
We booked a getaway weekend on Orcas Island as a last spring getaway. We stayed at a lovely romantic hotel and planned to climb Mt Constitution. For us, it was a glorious sunny, 60-degree day. This is a rare event of this kind in Washington in April. A perfect day to hike.
The hike was not easy, but we made it up, stopping to enjoy the views from the top and eat our lunch. We found a private location with stunning views of the Puget Sound and Mount Baker. I could sense that Travis was a bit tricky. He was more floppy than normal and was showing me plenty of affection.
He then whispered into my ear, “Wanna get crazy, wanna get married?” I was shocked at first, but then I was shown the engagement ring. It was actually the property of my late grandmother, and he reset the call to a more modern setting. I lost it! Between the view and the crew, as well as the most incredible person on my face, I shook my head and said, “Yes!”
The Dress & Attire
Myself, I was looking for an outfit that I could dance in (I like to dance) and look fun. I knew that I wanted to wear white with a touch of class. You only get married once! When I put the dress on at the Sarah Seven trunk show at The Dress Theory, I knew that it was the dress for me. And the best aspect of it was the one Sarah Seven herself had said for me to try!
For Travis, I was certain that the guy wouldn’t be wearing the traditional tuxedo. Therefore, I wanted him dressed in a hue that could stand out against the greenery background. We chose a bright navy suit and white crisp shirt for a more classic style, as well as a very delicate tie. We had the most amazing shopping experience at Nordstrom in Seattle. They were very accommodating and even helped us put our look together. The tailoring was amazing, too!
The Flowers
My flowers are so beautiful; I can’t think of words to describe how gorgeous, stunning, gorgeous, and perfect they were. I wanted an unfinished and whimsical look that was not traditional. The bouquet I chose to create was large, filled with texture, and vibrant. Molly included hydrangeas as well as garden roses, and numerous other gorgeous flowers that really made the bouquet stand out.
My bridesmaids’ gowns were small versions, and we all wore flowing ribbons that completed the fun look. The arbor that we got married in was gorgeous as well. The bride used the same color and texture in the tree that made the ideal backdrop to where we exchanged vows.
Also, we had flower-filled lanterns along the aisle, which gave the impression of an elegant and romantic experience. It’s hard to be more pleased with the centerpieces. We utilized mercury vases made of gold for a mixture of garden roses, hydrangeas, wisteria, and other greenery that brought the tables alive.
The Venue & Style
The wedding I wanted to plan was to reflect our individuality as well as our love for each other and our love for Washington, which we have fallen in love. It was important to me that the color palette be bright but not overwhelming and with the overall impression of being in the woods. The natural beauty surrounding. With this in mind, an outdoor location seemed like the ideal choice, especially one with lush greenery and felt like a place to escape the reality of life.
My colors were individual. I wanted a smoky blue and greenery to dominate, along with pops of fuschia, cranberry, and peach to make the celebration feel more lively! Thankfully, I had an excellent wedding organizer and florist who made all my wishes become reality!
Favorite Moments
The day was a blur for the two of us. However, some moments made an impression. The first glimpse was one that I will not forget. He looked stunning in his dress and in the midst of a beautiful (hallelujah!) May Seattle day. I recall exactly when it happened.
In this ceremony, we paid homage to Travis, his brother, who tragically passed away two years earlier. The emotion he expressed and the tenderness my uncle, who officiated, was able to show in acknowledging Brian’s loss was deeply touching.
