Three Wedding-Related Scams to Watch Out For and How To Avoid Them

There are many types of wedding-related scams. They can all be used to defraud newlyweds and take their money. These three scams can make your wedding planning experience smooth.

1. Gem Scams

It’s difficult enough to choose an engagement ring or wedding ring. But it doesn’t make it any easier if you end up with a fake diamond. Many ring shoppers fall for phony rings or designs that aren’t worth the money. Ring shoppers are often lured by phony ring deals, high price marks, or sketchy diamonds.

You can avoid falling for such scams by having a professional appraiser evaluate the diamond’s quality. If this is not possible, inquire about non-certified diamonds on display. Avoid them or ask for a substantial discount. They are not quality-certified by the Gemological Institute of America. Industry experts consider the GIA to be the best gemstone rating agency in the world. A GIA-approved certificate means that a ring has been subject to rigorous inspection and graded by professional jewelologists.

You can also check reviews from customers to find out if the advertised gem is lower than it appears.

2. Unscrupulous wedding planners

A wedding planner who is not available or does not follow through with promises can cause havoc on the bride and groom’s big day. Like any other wedding vendor, ensure that your wedding planner has been thoroughly vetted and given a solid rating from the Better Business Bureau.

For information, ratings and tips on working with vendors, wedding planners and other tips, you can also visit forums on websites like Wedding Wire and The Knot.A designer gown is ordered from an online shop at a steep discount, but the dress you receive is from a different designer, or is in poor condition.

Ask for references from your potential wedding coordinator (if they don’t give any, keep searching) and be wary if a large deposit is required for services (more than 50% of the total cost). To ensure that your wedding is on time and within budget, insist on a signed contract.

3. Wedding Vendor Scams

Another area where fraudulent activity occurs can be with specific wedding vendors, like a photographer/videographer, caterer, entertainer, and floral specialist. A no-show band or photographer, low-quality arrangements or catering experience are not what a bride or groom needs. Hire a professional wedding planner. Make sure you have references and have a contract.

Ask trusted family members and friends for recommendations to avoid potential problems. Hire local if you want to minimize the chance of having problems.

The newlyweds are entitled to seek fair deals to get the best deal when planning their wedding. Be aware that there are many scammers out there. It is important to verify the authenticity of any vendors you hire, carefully examine the legitimacy of online offers, and be careful when paying wedding vendors. Do not let your emotions get you into a bad situation because someone promised you something. You’ll increase the chances of your wedding being positive, free from fraudsters, and full of joy for what lies ahead.
